Healthy Changes Means Healthy Living!!
Do you remember my last post about Carlie C's? Well, I didn't mention the lifestyle changes we're making here at home!! My sister and I were talking and it seems as though she is having symptoms of Angina and I Googled how to reverse cholesterol damage and found that it is quite possible with the right diet. After reading the information I knew would be beneficial for the family to try something new since what we were doing wasn't working!
I am not a nutritionist nor am I a Doctor, however, I am a mom of four and admit that I got caught up in the "how quick can I cook a meal" phase. I say phase because I wasn't taught how to cook that way. See, both of my grandmothers always cooked from scratch and they used fresh ingredients from either their garden, livestock or the grocery store/butcher. It wasn't until I was in my early twenties that I had to come up with quick meals that were budget friendly ($50.00 for 3 people that needed to last for 2 weeks and that also included diapers and wipes for our son). It wasn't so easy, but we ate A LOT of Hamburger Helper. Well, as the years passed I would "try" to cook good, wholesome food for dinner, but even that was difficult raising 3 children as a single mom holding down a full-time job so, of course, that didn't last long either. So, here I am again giving this a go! This time I have the internet and a wonderful motivation to keep me going! What is it you ask? Well, as crazy as it seems, I figured that there has to be something to the way our grandparents did things back then! Not to mention that Food, Inc helped motivate me to feed my kids something wholesome and worthy of being eaten. If you're not following me then here's an example: go through your cabinets and check your food labels for High Fructose Corn Syrup. I couldn't believe how many items in my pantry that contained it. We've all seen the commercial that always says it's okay in moderation, but unfortunately when it's in almost everything then it isn't in moderation. (I just Googled it looking for the commercial so I could quote it verbatim and all of these search results came up and they're VERY negative).
Google and see for yourself! The sad thing is that it's in things you wouldn't even think about and when you're busy - reading labels is the LAST thing on your mind! Anywho, I am getting off on a tangent so I will get back to my shopping experience below!
When I got to Carlie C's I loaded up on some new potatoes, some summer and zucchini squash and it was all farmed locally which was even better!! I picked up some celery, carrots, 8 green bell peppers, 2 sweet onion and 3 yellow onions and it continued throughout the store. Did you read the story about the meat department? Well, that's where I picked up a roast, 2 packages of round steak, 2 packages of center cut pork chops, 2 whole chicken fryers, 6 lbs of ground beef (90% lean) and some stew beef. I also picked up some spices, flour, yeast and dairy products. I scooted over to the frozen department and found some frozen mixed vegetables, corn, etc. With all of this fresh food I wasn't sure what to expect at the cash register, but to my amazement it was actually about the same as when I purchased processed food, cereal, dinners except this food will last almost 10-12 days instead of the normal 5-7 days the latter would last!! Now, if I had known their coupon policy there is a chance I could have saved more money, but I just contacted them to find out for myself!! As soon as I hear something back I will definitely post it here!!
